THE PLANNING OF A BOAT ....

This is from one of Masaki's classmates and new found friend at the Boat school, Zach.

"It has been, and will continue to be, my pleasure to work with Masaki. He is so eager to learn and fun to be around!!"

Zach sympathizes with Masaki's confusion. He learning a second language is one thing, but Zach couldn't imagine the patience one must need to learn the language of boatbuilding; it's like a language within a language!

This weeks project:

So, we've been "drafting" this last week. As I understand it, drafting is not something that will be part of our normal boatbuilding routine. However, we're doing this exercise to better understand how a "line plan" works. Soon enough we'll actually be "lofting".

Here's the difference:

Drafting is creating a scale drawing of a boat. For example, the drawings we're making are 1.5 inch scale drawings. That means that 1 foot in real life is represented in our drawings as being 1.5 inches long. These scaled drawings are called "line plans" and are usually bought from a naval architect or designer. This last week, we've been essentially copying a lines plan. That's why I said it's really more of an exercise - usually we will go straight to lofting.

Lofting is taking a lines plan and drawing it to its actual size. When we do start lofting at school we'll be going through the same process as we're doing now, but instead of drawing on paper, we'll be drawing on large sheets of plywood!

Thanks for the explanation Zach!
