The NEW WORLD OF SHIPWRIGHT VOCABULARY!

October 2nd:  The opening day of the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding.  They started with an orientation and introduction session with coffee and morning treats.   They all took a tour of the school and were introduced to the instructors of each course.

October 3rd:    The first few days were getting acquainted with their tools, learning the proper method for sharpening and names.  Each day begins with a lecture for about 2 hours and then off to the shops for the practical application via various projects that they are to accomplish.

October 5th:  They had a lecture and then worked on projects until noon.  8 am  to 10 am with a lecture by Sean.  Then from 10 am to 12 pm worked in the shop.  Masaki bought Long board.  Early dismissal due to the afternoon Welcome Party for Students and their families from 3 to 5 pm.

School hours are mornings: 8 am to 12 noon,
lunch from: 12 to 1 pm and
                         afternoons: from 1 to 5
With extra hours from 5:30 to 7 pm most evenings.

October 9th:  Lecture on various wood and trees lecture.  Afternoon we work independently on our projects. Masaki found out that a sharp chisel slices through wood very nicely and sometimes skin too!  Luckily no stitches were necessary!

October 10th:  More lectures on wood. A classmate is interested in coming  to meeting.  Clarence and Marilyn picked Masaki up for the Gospel meeting at the  Kitchen’s Home.

October 11th:  School began with breakfast party at school pancakes for all.  The faculty made breakfast for all.  Then at 8 am to 11 am the lecture began.  It was the final of the 3 days of wood talks, what the differences between wood and usage.  How to know the age of the books.  Ray Specks was the final instructor and this teacher was hard to understand, because he doesn’t use pictures or drawings.  Afternoon projects  joint.   Masaki took his first quiz and got 73%.  (He had some help from the instructor, he said....)

October 12th: Went to school on his long board.  The day began at 8 to 11 lecture explained about lofting / using graphs and water line.  Lots of new words....
11 to 12 pm went to the shop and worked on projects, Masaki made an angle gauge from scrap pieces of wood. Off to Lunch 12-1pm  Then back for work until   2 pm on projects.
